Winnipeg Folk Fest Interview & Performance: Madeleine Roger

The singer/songwriter chats about her new album "Nerve" and performs the song "Caledonia" with guests

Winnipeg's Madeleine Roger has been releasing music for nearly a decade – as a solo artist, with her brother Lucas as Roger Roger, and recently accompanying The Fretless on tour and for a few songs on their upcoming new album. She's also been a part of the Winnipeg Folk Festival for even longer than that, for years as a volunteer and then later as a performer.

She appeared at the 2024 festival in advance of the release of her new solo record, Nerve, which came out August 30 in stores and on streaming. Her festival was one of the busiest we've ever seen, as beyond her solo concert, she also performed as part of the main concert of The Fretless, as well as a number of workshops by herself and with The Fretless.

After her final performance on the Sunday of the fest, I chatted with Madeleine about her entire festival experience, her songwriting, and recording Nerve in New York a couple years ago with producer Josh Kaufman. Plus, one of the acts joining Madeleine for a workshop was Josh's band Bonny Light Horseman, and so after the interview we feature a performance of a song Madeleine wrote with The Fretless where she was joined by Bonny Light Horseman, SYML, and Ruth Moody. You can check it out below.

We've got lots more content from this past summer's festival coming out this fall, so keep your eyes and ears tuned right here for all that (plus our regular podcasts, movie reviews, and more).
