The 51st Annual Grammy Awards may be taking place tonight -- with the likes of Lil Wayne, Coldplay, Sara Bareilles, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, and Radiohead all raking in multiple nominations -- but we here at ShowbizMonkeys.com look at music a little differently.
The North American* Genius Monkey Comedy Award is given to a comedian -- sketch, stand-up, and/or improv -- who is on their way up. It's not necessarily given to the absolute funniest comedian working today, as it's not an award for someone who is incredibly well-known to the general public.
After a few years of critically-lauded but hardly-seen films vying for the top spots at the Academy Awards, many were predicting that things this year would return back to the so-called "Golden Age", when commercially successful films could still win the big awards.
This has been a strange year for television. The writers' strike threw a big wrench into 07-08 TV season, and even relegated last year's Golden Globes to a press conference rather than the booze-filled Party of the Stars it normally is.
The season is upon us... joy to the world! No, I'm not talking about the holiday season -- I'm talking about Hollywood awards season. The Emmys and Grammys always get things started in the fall, early every new year are the 2 big film awards: The Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.
The Emmy Awards have come and gone, and with the exception of a few surprises (Bryan Cranston stealing Best Actor in a Drama away from pretty much every other nominated actor), most of the favourites went home with the little golden statuette.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominess for the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards on Thursday morning. Critically-acclaimed darling Mad Men, airing on cable channel AMC, took in 16 nominations including Best Drama and Lead Actor in a Drama Series (star Jon Hamm).
With the Golden Globes a wash, and the Oscars in jeopardy, the Screen Actors Guild Awards was the one Hollywood awards show completely unaffected by the WGA strike (as SAG has been supportive of the Writers Guild from the beginning).
Three sitcoms from the same comedy block; two medical dramas quite different from each other; a couple hour-long comedies looking at opposite ends of the social spectrum; some mysterious people with super powers; a critically-acclaimed but ratings-starved drama; and of course, a serial killer who's actually kind of endearing.
With the writers' strike still upon us and the 2008 Golden Globes coming and going as almost an afterthought, the nominations for the 80th annual Academy Awards were released from Hollywood on Wednesday.
