Toronto-based stand-up comic D.J. Demers has only been in the game for about 6 years, but in that time he's risen through the strong local Toronto comedy scene and made a name for himself on an international level. After winning 2014's Just for Laughs Homegrown Comic Competition, which features some of the top young pros in the country, he was invited to be a part of a JFL TV broadcast. As if that wasn't enough for Demers, he followed that up with a December appearance on TBS' Conan -- an appearance that has amassed nearly 1,000,000 views on YouTube and put Demers on the map in America.
Appearing at his first-ever Winnipeg Comedy Festival this year, I got a chance to sit down with D.J. a few hours after he landed in Winnipeg yesterday. We spoke about his early interest in making people laugh, his experiences at JFL and on Conan, his excitement for this year's Winnipeg Comedy Festival, and how he's actually (slowly) on his way to that $20,000,000 he only joked about on Conan.
Be sure to catch Demers at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival this weekend, including his appearance as part of the Friday, April 10 "Too Much Information" gala at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre at 9:15pm; his first-ever taping of CBC's The Debaters on Saturdady, April 11 at 2:00pm; and his headlining gig at Rumor's Comedy Club, also on Saturday, at 7:15pm.
You can follow what's next for D.J. Demers on Twitter (@djdemers), Facebook (facebook.com/djdemerscomedy), and on his website (www.djdemers.com). You can also catch him on the weekly AMI-tv show, The D.J. Demers Show, Thursdays at 9:30pm E/P.
