The year of 2005 was considered a huge disappointment for the movie industry. The box office receipts fell for the first time in ages, and while studio mouthpieces may have you believe it was because of rampant downloading or the rise in DVD sales, the fact remains that in 2005, the movies just weren't as good.

VIFF: Brightlight Pictures Party

For most people, the 24th annual Vancouver International Film Festival started on Thursday, September 29th, with the opening day of screenings at the festival's 10 screens. In terms of the official launch of the parties that come with the festival, that occurred later that night at the Aquarium.

Looking back at my introduction article to last year's Vancouver International Film Festival, I found it hard to believe that a year had passed since the 2003 edition. It had been an interesting year at the movies and one that I was hoping to out-do with the 2004 edition.

Canadian films often have a hard time finding an audience theatrically. There are many reasons why, none the least of which is the fact that they are often given less-to-no promotion and released in only a handful of theaters for what is usually only one or two weeks before disappearing to the shelves of your local video store.

My opinion on interviews is widely known. I enjoy doing them occasionally, but am not the biggest fan of all the work that goes into preparing for them. Often, you have to talk to a publicist and the back and forth starts, trying to find a time that works for everyone involved.
