Myq Kaplan is a New York-based comedian who's been in the industry for over 20 years, and out of the gate he tips his hand at the type of experience you're in for. He starts with a joke-dense, wordplay-laced barrage of material that lets me know it's something I'm 100% here for, but by the end I was surprised by the depths and truths he shared, because as he establishes in the first few minutes, there are two things he does: tells jokes and truths.
A contestant on the 2010 season of Last Comic Standing and having performed at the 2009 Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, he's an established and talented comedian who has done the reps, and it's quite clear that this is a pro who knows his stuff. He's been putting this show together for 5 years and you can see the polish in the show.
This joke-dense, philosophically-sharp start is a ruse though, as the show's theme of love, kindness, and commitment starts to emerge that's both funny and heartfelt, which is something that elevates this special (it's a heap if you will). The ability to get a special out on the internet is now easier than ever, so we're seeing a lot of comedians releasing not-so-special specials, but this is a truly special special – it's one with an emergent but clear agenda, and that's to highlight the love between two people.
Myq knows the tricks, repetition, rule of threes, and callbacks, with the show's denouement being one of the most elaborate callbacks I've ever seen, and I was truly blown away. But what brought it to the next level for me was his closing monologue followed by a lovely montage. As a 50-something-year-old person who was similarly divorced in their 20s when they were dumb, this spoke to me, and I think it has a lesson for everyone in it.
