Review: Rocky Balboa

Why do we need another Rocky movie?

There are so many ways to answer that question. You can say that 60-year-old Sylvester Stallone is too old, Rocky V sucked, and we have seen this story told way too many times. I will let you have all those answers and say that yes they are all valid.

But what you should probably say is, why not?

It's based on an immortal story that has charmed generations for decades. "Charlotte's Web" is often referred to by a lot of people as the best children's book ever written and remembered as a lot of people's favorite book from when they were a child. It is timeless.

The film version of Charlotte's Web is as timeless as the book.

Review: Eragon

There have been a lot of "dragon movies" throughout the years. But there seems to a curse when it comes to making a "dragon movie". Every one of them have been box office disappointments, except The Lord of the Rings trilogy, of course.

Some of the more famous ones were Disney's Dragonslayer and Pete's Dragon which were pretty good for what they were.

Review: Dreamgirls

I have to admit I am quite a huge admirer of director Bill Condon, who gave us the brilliant films Kinsey (2001) and Gods & Monsters (1998).

Anthony Hopkins is at the time in his life where he can take any roles he wants. He's 68 years old and in this movie, plays a senior citizen.

This movie is based on the true story of Burt Munro, a New Zealander who has one mission in life: break the speed record for his motorcycle on the salt flats in Utah.

Review: Blood Diamond

Director Edward Zwick has had a long career in both television and film, dating back to the late 80s with films like 1986's David Mamet-penned About Last Night... and 1989's Academy Award-winning film Glory that rocketed Denzel Washington to super star status.

Review: The Holiday

Posted by: Tom Milroy  •  December 8, 2006 @ 11:59am

There are some things quite right with The Holiday and there are some things that are just wrong. For example: there's no reason for any romantic comedy to have a running time of more than 2 hours.

With visions of "chick flick" dancing in my head, I expected the movie to blow, and the first half did. I blame you, Cameron Diaz. You're not good.

Review: The Fountain

Posted by: Tom Milroy  •  November 22, 2006 @ 11:59am

This is the first review I've written without really knowing what the movie is about. I know, I know. It's a Darren Aronofsky film and perhaps I'm not supposed to know what's going on.

The Fountain is a mess and we've seen this happen before: give a director too much money and it just doesn't work.

Review: Bobby

Imagine if you will a disaster film like Titanic, Towering Inferno, or Poseidon Adventure, and then imagine that instead of the disaster you have the 1968 assassination of presidential hopeful Robert F Kennedy.

Review: Casino Royale

Posted by: Tom Milroy  •  November 17, 2006 @ 11:59am

Movie-goers should know, this version of Casino Royale has nothing to do with the one made in 1967. Any movie that credits five directors is not going to work. It was horrible.

The 2006 version stars Daniel Craig as a new, leaner and meaner James Bond. He doesn't have a great sense of humour, but that'll come in future Bond films.
